SP-Jack-Up or SP-JUB

Very Special Vessels / Ships who can Jack-Up the ship's hull completely out of the water to become a kind of fixed work platform.

The different names for these vessels, depends more or less on the nature of work these Lift boat perform.

For example, JUB, Jack up barge, these barges work in oilfields and in the offshore and in-land water construction industry. A jack up in the oil industry is also referred to as a jack-up drilling rig. Mainly these barges / rigs have No Propellers and need to be towed by tugs from one location to another. This is where the name Non Prop comes from (None Propulsion).

Boats and ships, these vessels have Propulsion by Own propellers. Now Combine a Jack-up with a Ship and one has a SP-JUB. So Boat and Ships have propulsion that's the main difference. Ships must comply with the STCW Code, Whereas Barges must Comply with the MODU code.

The purpose of the SP-JUB and Lift Boat.

As we learned already, Ships and Boats have propulsion, these type of jack-up can sail from one location to another as a ship or boat does, they do not need expensive tug boats to be towed to get underway.

Underway to a new location.

A Lift Boat or SP Jack up is also a Hotel for the Crew and Craftsmen necessary for a project, they have Huge accomodation for crew aboard. A Self propelled jack up or Lift boat can sail with a minimum crew as per STCW minimum manning requirements whilst underway, and fly- or Ship-in all necessary Craftsmen later whilst arrived on the new location if required.

Arrived on location

The SP-Jack-Up can be used for different kind of projects, construction or work over a well in an oilfield. the Self Propelled Jack up Units used for Construction mostly have one or 2 heavy lift Cranes on board for the projects. See the video and picture below.

Recognized Training Course

Due to the combined nature of this vessel, the Crew on a SP JUB needs Specialist Training for the operations. On top of the STCW requirements all Masters, Officers and/or Engineers need to be Well Trained with the Characteristic of a SP-Jack-up-ship regarding;

The Marine Operations of Self Propelled Self Elevating Platforms (MOSEP-SP).
